I enjoyed reading the Complete Sea Kayaker's Handbook by Shelley Johnson. Shelley is an experienced kayaker, and I have seen her teach even on a kayaking DVD. This book features a well structured table of contents, and includes all topics pertinent to novice sea kayakers. A quick review of many subjects--paddle selection, clothing, camping gear, boat selection, cockpit modifications, etc.-- are all detailed here. While indeed being thorough, however, I do question whether the book is, as the ttle would suggest, complete. Each of the topics is covered with a fair overview, but no particular topic is covered exhaustively. If a comprehensive review of the many facets of this sport is being considered, one might secure some videos or DVDs, which frankly can demonstrate things that written text simply cannot. This is not a detraction from author Johnson, who makes sound use of the medium of the printed page, including some drawings and black and white photos. I sincerely believe this to be a book that someone brand new to the sport could relish; for the intermediate to advanced paddler, there are other alternatives including video.
